Hmmm, imagine a deconstructed Big Mac paired with Amish noodles. That is what this recipe offers: the heartiness of a Big Mac with the comfort of noodles. I'm not sure the special sauce is quite the same as you find in a real Big Mac, but, who cares? This recipe is comfort food at its finest and most delicious.
🍲 Casserole is King
Casseroles are among the most popular of Amish creations.
Casseroles are so popular among the Amish, because they're very versatile, feed a crowd, and transport well. The Amish are often attending or organizing potlucks in the homes of church members, and that often means bringing in a quick carry-in dish. A casserole is something that can be thrown together fast, baked anywhere, and feed a crowd.
And you don't need an exact headcount when making a casserole. In other words, if you wanted to marinate some chicken breasts to feed a crowd, you'd pretty much have to have a headcount; with the casserole, you just sort of have a rough idea of how many people are going to be there and prepare accordingly. Most casserole recipes can easily be doubled or tripled if need be. So they're just really easy to assemble for a large group.
Plus, casseroles are very filling, hearty, and can negate the need for a lot of extra vegetable side dishes, because you can just put plenty of veggies in a casserole.
So, for the Amish, casseroles are not just delicious, they're also practical. That is why casseroles are king among the Amish!
📋 Step-By-Step Big Mac Casserole
Okay, no sesame bun in this, but lots of other good stuff.
Basic ingredients are the hallmark of this casserole. And you have your Big Mac basics of ground beef, cheese, onion, and tomato. Pickle isn't in the ingredient list, but feel free to throw some in! Hmmm, no lettuce in this either. If you really want to go with the Big Mac theme, you can add lettuce at the end. The recipe does call for ketchup and you can add a tablespoon or two of mustard if y ou like to this recipe. Some people like to add some thousand island dressing to to the hamburger mixture to get it to be more like a Big Mac sauce. But I love the recipe just as it appears below, very basic!
Add the cheese to your hamburger and onion mixture. The recipe as given to me doesn't specify what type of cheese. We used a mild shredded cheddar cheese, but you can use any kind. I like sharp cheddar cheese.
This is also the step where you can add more flavors to this if you wish. Seasonings like garlic powder, pepper, paprika, and onion powder can be added and you'll get even more of the burgers flavor. Just make sure you stir the ground beef mixture together well so all the flavors meld before you spread as a single layer into the baking dish or casserole dish.
If you want a more "Big Mac" experience you can leave the noodles out, but we love the comfort quotient that the noodles add.
If you wanted to go all out on the Big Mac theming this is where you could instead use crumbled toasted sesame seed bun instead of cracker crumbs but we like the crunch that a cracker offers.
This is the casserole before it goes into the oven and then out.
And when it comes out of the oven an hour later you get this delicious baked and crispy golden brown casserole. This is such an easy dinner recipe.
This casserole pairs well with a veggie, some baked bread, or fruit. The whole family will like this. Store leftovers in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator or freezer. If storing in the fridge you can cover with foil or plastic wrap if you don't have an airtight container. Hmmm, serving some fries with this would be great!
