Apple season is late summer and early autumn in most midwestern Amish areas. That isn't, however, to say that apples aren't enjoyed year-round in most Amish homes. They are. Cool cellars provide the perfect spot for storage apples that can be turned into applesauces, pies, and sliced for snacks year-round. These apple brownies are perfect on a cold winter's day with the warm glaze and generous apple chunks.
My mother recently made these and both my parents gave the recipe rave reviews. My Dad is the tougher critic of the two and he was solidly onboard with these brownies. Geez, that is there not to love about this dessert? Salivate over the photos and then enjoy the recipe below!
AMISH APPLE BROWNIES
1 cup butter, softened
2 eggs, well beaten
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoons salt
2 cups chopped apples
1 ¾ cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ cups pecans
Vanilla Glaze
1 cup powder sugar
1 tablespoon hot water
¼ teaspoon vanilla
In a large mixing bowl cream butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla with mixer. Â Combine dry ingredients and add to butter mixture. Â Mix until flour is moistened. Â Fold in apples and nuts. Â Spread in greased 9x9 baking pan and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.
Drizzle warm brownies with vanilla glaze.
And here are four more awesome Amish "winter brownies!"
