In Midwestern Amish communities, blackberries grow wild in thickets and along the edges of the woods, and they are quite prized. Plump, juicy blackberries can be turned into jellies and jams and baked into cakes. I have been to Amish settlements this time of year in certain parts of Ohio and makeshift produce stands will be along side the road with tables just groaning under the weight of freshly picked blackberries for sale.
Of course, peaches are also prized in these same communities, the plump orange orbs are juicy and sweet this time of year. So what better thing to do than marry the two together into a crisp? Peach-blackberry crisp is a sure sign of summer.
We have plenty of blackberries growing on our property, so we channeled our inner Amish to make a blackberry peach crisp the other day. And, wow, is it delicious. We have all enjoyed it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, but I’m fine just eating the crisp by itself. Really, really good. I think summer crisps are the best because the fruit you can pack into it is fresh and delicious. Basically, anything that can be baked would taste great in this crisp. What about Watermelon Crisp? No, I don't think so...but blackberries, apples, peaches, blueberries, all of those fruits would be great.
By the way, a "crisp" is a great option for using fresh fruits in the summer because it's less laborious than making a pie. No rolling out of a crust, just basically dump the fruit into a baking dishes and cover with coarse crumbs. So easy. And delicious!
Start with fresh peaches or maybe you'll be like me and accidentally grab some nectarines. It's all good!
Pack the peaches and blackberries into a baking dish.
Cover the crisp with the coarse crumbs mixture.
All golden brown and out of the oven.
This is where you can several options and a lot of this is just personal preference. If I am going to eat this crisp hot out of the oven then, yes, absolutely top with ice cream or drink with a cold glass of milk. The cold ice cream kind of "evens out" the warm fruit and it's just such a delicious combination. But, if you are saving it to eat until the next day, once that crisp is at room temperature or chilled, I think it tastes great just eating it by itself. Makes for a super breakfast!
