    Amish Back-to-School Recipes

Amish schools generally don't open their doors until after Labor Day, but non-Amish are beginning to open across the country now.  I know, hard to believe.  But those school buses are beginning to rumble now.  So with the beginning of the year, we'll look at some good back-to-school recipes that Amish kids enjoy, perhaps your kids or grandkids will too.

HOMEMADE THERMOS TOMATO SOUP -  Put it in a heat-keeping Thermos and this will stay warm til lunch time. Click here.

LUNCHBOX SOUR CREAM RAISIN BARS -  Perfect for a lunch box.

    AMISH SCHOOL SANDWICH

    2 c. drained chopped sauerkraut
    1 c. ground ham
1 c. chopped cheddar or any cheese
    1 tsp. caraway seed
    ¼ c. chopped onion
    Miracle Whip, enough to moisten
Spread on rye bread. Butter both sides and bake in medium oven until cheese melts.

    DANISH DESSERT

Fill a week’s supply of baby food jars with hot cooked caramel pudding or Dannish dessert.  The baby food jars often seal, which  keeps the pudding from spoiling.

2 pints frozen strawberries or 1 quart canned. Add 3 or 4 cups water and suagr to taste.

Let this come to the boiling point.  Add enough clear jel so that it is a little runny.  Remove from heat and add 5 rounded tablespoons of jello.  (Jello is cheaper when bought by the pound)

    LUNCHBOX DESSERT

Crunchy or smooth peanut butter mixed in with leftover frosting, milk, and powdered sugar makes for a delicious snack spread between two graham crackers.
