The Crofton, Kentucky Amish settlement is a horse and buggy New Order community. This is a rare group of "electric Amish." You'll find electric refrigerators and other appliances, although not TV or the internet. This community makes my list of places I want to visit if only so I can partake in the church's once-a-month suppers which are open to the public.
There are also some different occupations found in this church. For instance, I know of an Amish plumber that works here. Unusual! So this is definitely a somewhat different church.
Crofton is a small hamlet in Christian County, Kentucky. Christian County has experienced quite a bit of growth in its plain population over the past 20 years. Many of the new arrivals are from Pennsylvania and Ohio. But this particular Crofton church has deeper roots in the area.
Here are the basics about this somewhat unusual Amish church:
Founded: December 1972
Church Districts: 2
Amish Households: 47 (as of 2011)
Buggies: black, closed
Amish-owned businesses: Pennyrile Pallets, Pennyrile Sawmill, Castlebury Cutstock, Kenwood Milling, Horizon Woodworks, Lewis Hill Sales, Crofton Country Cupboard, and Woodmanse Specialities
Highlights: Visit the annual Amish Consignment Auction held this year on April 12. Start your day with a Pancake and Sausage Buffet Breakfast (from 7:00 am to 9:30 am). In this editor's opinion that alone would be reason enough to go!:) Concessions & baked goods provided by the Crofton Amish Church will be available for the rest of the day. Grilled pork chop Sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, popcorn, ice cream pies, and candy bars and drinks are on the menu. Again, the food alone is worth it:) But if you want to see more of what is being sold at the auction, click here.
