    Classic Amish Pizza Loaf
This pizza loaf pairs well with green beans, potatoes, and a deviled egg. Or feel free to experiment, like pairing with corn on the cob or a salad.

This dish is very typical of the type that Amish cooks like to either invent or embrace: hearty, pizza-y, and easy.  Plus it feeds a family of 6 or 8 people.  So if you’re looking for something hearty and easy, pizza loaf may be for you! This recipe comes to me from an Amish woman near Charm,Ohio.

Fifty years ago - maybe even 25 - pizza was a rarity in Amish kitchens.  But as pizza took hold in pop culture - the Pizza Hutting of America - the Amish took notice.  In addition to delicious homemade pizza, pizza has found its way into burgers, loaves, sloppy joes, and even "pizza spaghetti".  This homemade pizza loaf recipe is yet another twist on the Amish love affair with pizza!

    🙋 FAQ

Is Pizza Popular Among the Amish?

Pizza is popular among the Amish, both homemade and store-bought. Homemade is easy to whip up from home ingredients but take-out pizza is also proving popular among harried Amish homemakers who want a break from fixing supper!

I remember the first time I visited an Amish home, this is in the early 90s, or mid 90s, with a cell phone. Cell phones were still a novelty back then, and I wanted to treat some Amish friends of mine that I was visiting to pizza. The Amish family was shocked when I pulled a phone out of my coat pocket, ordered a pizza, and the pizza parlor in the nearest town was equally shocked to be getting a call and delivery request from that address, because they knew the Amish in that area didn’t have phones (and mobile phones were still rare). Anyway, within an hour we had piping hot pies delivered to us in this rural region, thanks to East of Chicago Pizza Company. So I guess, in a way, it was people like me that helped contribute to pizza becoming popular in Amish communities.

So, let's look at this recipe:

    Classic Amish Pizza Loaf

This recipe "marries" pizzeria style pizza with meatloaf and gives you a "pizza loaf." This is a fun twist on old-fashioned meatloaf.

As always, when trying to replicate an Amish recipe, use the freshest, leanest ground beef you can get your hands on. This recipe does call for one egg and a farm fresh egg is always preferable. Combine all the ingredients in a big bowl and then fill up a loaf pan with the mixture.

    🍕 Homemade Amish Pizza Loaf

    • 1 1 /2 pounds ground beef
    • 8 ounces tomato sauce
    • 1 /4 cup chopped onions
    • 1 beaten egg
    • 3 /4 cup quick oats
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 1 /2 teaspoons salt
    • ½ teaspoon oregano
    • 1 /4 teaspoon pepper
    • 6 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese

    📋 Instructions

    1. Combine all ingredients except cheese.
    2. Pat half of mixture into a lightly greased oblong pan.
    3. Put cheese (reserve a few tablespoons) on top then cover with other half of beef mixture.
    4. Bake uncovered at 350 for 1 hour.
    5. Sprinkle reserved cheese on top a few minutes before serving.

Thanks for a great recipe. I made this last night and we loved it. I substituted ground turkey for the beef and used cheddar instead of mozzarella since that is what I had. I topped it with a little of the sauce so it wouldn't dry out, then sprinkled the cheese on. It was very good, thanks again.
