We usually think of autumn as "apple season" but, really, if you are like me, you enjoy apples year-round. Yes, in the autumn I go to my favorite local orchard to pick out a just-harvested batch of Honeycrisp apples, but you can get good apples year-round in the supermarket. And that means you don't have to wait until autumn to have delicious breads, cakes, and sauces. You can enjoy them year-round. Still, as this is being posted we are headed in Midwestern USA "apple season" so this coffeecake becomes even more of a favorite around here.
Some Amish own and operate apple orchards. And, I tell you, there is nothing better than cruising around Amish country on a fall day and stumbling upon a little family-owned orchard selling homemade cider made from their own hand-operated press. I know of one little family-owned Amish orchard that sells homemade cider doughnuts in the fall. Man, are those the epitome of good!
Apples are of great value on an Amish farm, being turned into cakes, salads, butters, jams, cider breads, and some are even used as treats for the horses. One of the most popular ways to use an overabundance of apples is in an apple coffeecake. Nothing better than a warm slice of apple coffeecake on a Sunday morning. This Amish apple coffeecake is amazing, so you'll definitely want to try
This is also a popular cake to do take to the after-church gatherings. This recipe comes to us from a Miss Lizzie Miller, appropriately, of Apple Creek, Ohio!

Liz Miller's Apple Coffeecake recipe looks delicious! However, I need one question answered before I make it. The recipe refers to "topping" There is no separation in the list of ingredients that tell you what the toppings are. I'm thinking that the 4 ingredients before apples (brown sugar, nuts, white sugar, and cinnamon) is the topping. I would like to know before I make this delicious-looking recipe. Thank you.

Oops, good point, the cinnamon-sugar-nuts are the topping. Good luck and enjoy!
