Pork chops are a reasonably priced cut of meat compared to others. A friend of mine bought some sirloin steaks recently and my eyes bulged when I saw the $37 price tag. I'll take my $5 pack of five pork chops. It's a delicious cut of meat, I think, and can be prepared in a variety of ways.
Pork is popular on Amish farms because it is economical, accessible, and easy to prepare. On hog butchering day pork chops are a prized cut of meat and chops are cut and stored and enjoyed year round. Unlike my thin Kroger chops, the Amish pork chops are thick cuts of juicy meat. But even if you are stuck with in flavorless pork chops, you can really infuse them with flavor in many ways.
🥘 Caramelize the Chops
What is the Amish way of adding flavor to meat (any everything else)? Add sugar! Brown sugar in this recipe allows for a delicious caramelization to occur. You don't need to add water, the juice from the pork chops combines with the sugar to make its own delicious caramel. A few tips
- Swirl the pan occasionally to distribute the heat evenly.
- Watch the sugar closely as it changes color. It will go from clear to light golden, then amber, and finally deep brown.

📋 Step-by-Step Sweet Parmesan Avocado Pork Chops
This is a very versatile recipe that you can switch up many ingredients to tailor to your taste, but the one key one: brown sugar.
Make sure to coat your chops with a generous rub of brown sugar. And then swirl them in a sauce of brown sugar and mustard. This adds some tang. You can use brown mustard, yellow mustard, or dijon mustard. I used dijon.
Add diced avocado while the pork chops are frying and then cover with cheese. I used Parmesan because that is all I had and it is not as heavy as a cheese, but you could definitely use shredded Cheddar cheese for a more "cheesy avocado" look and flavor. This is also when you want to add seasonings like sage or thyme.
These were so, so good. The avocado paired well with the chops and cheese, and we all know how nutrient-packed avocados are!

These chops sound delicious. I will try them soon.
I never cared much for Fruit Stripe Gum either, as you say rubbery after the first 10 minutes. My favorites as a kid of the 50's were cloves, Teaberry, Black Jack,, Beaman's (sp?) and I actually bought a pack of each at my local drugstore a few weeks ago. They were in a special candy case right by the checkout counter, Imagine that! They still taste just like they used to and none of them every lost their flavor very fast, except maybe the Teaberry. Doublemint was always my favorite, and my Dad loved Juicy Fruit. Good memories, thanks a bunch!

The chops are good and I think I need to go to your local drugstore!

I don't see any parmesan in the recipe.
Kevin Williams
Oops, sorry, Jane, just sprinkle the parm over the chops after you put them in the skillet. Really tasty!
