    Shaker Sour Cream Cookies and Shaker Sugar Cookies

    Recipes like these from The Shaker Cook Book most resemble Amish cooking:  simple, classic recipes made from the basic building blocks of baking:  sugar, flour, water,sour cream,etc.Enjoy these!

    Shaker Sour Cream Cookies

    Serves: 3 dozen
    Ingredients
    • 1 cup sugar
    • 3 eggs beaten
    • 1 cup sour cream
    • 3 /4 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 /4 teaspoon nutmeg
    • 3 cups flour
    Instructions
    1. Cream sugar and beaten eggs and add cream.
    2. Mix dry ingredients and add to egg mixture.
    3. Drop by spoonfuls onto buttered and floured cookie sheet.
    4. Bake in 400 degree oven until edges are golden.

    Shaker Sugar Cookies

    Serves: 3 dozen
    Ingredients
    • 1 cup butter
    • 2 cups sugar
    • 3 eggs
    • ½ teaspoon lemon peel, grated
    • 1 /4 teaspoon nutmeg
    • 3 /4 teaspoon cream of tartar
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 4 1 /2 cups flour
    Instructions
    1. Cream butter and sugar.
    2. Save ½ egg white for brushing cookies.
    3. Slightly beat the remaining eggs and add to butter mixture.
    4. Add grated lemon peel and nutmeg.
    5. Sift cream of tartar with flour and work into butter mixture.
    6. Form into ball, cover and chill an hour.
    7. Roll out to 1 /2 inch thickness and cut with large round cookie cutter.
    8. Brush with egg white and sprinkle generously with sugar.
    9. Bake at 400 for 10 mins.
