I love the Wheat Ridge Amish community in Adams County, Ohio. The hardscrabble hills are honeycombed with deep, rocky ravines and cloaked with thick forests. There's a richness of history and culture and biodiversity on these ridges. Add to that a thriving, vibrant Amish presence and, for me, it doesn't get much better than Adams County. Whenever I go to Adams County I always inevitably end up at the Amish-owned Keim Family Market and I wanted to bring you something different. But time was slipping away. I had to be in Maysville, Kentucky by 4 p.m. and I didn't really allow enough time for a leisurely visit to Wheat Ridge. So I thought I'd stop by Miller's Bakery, a sprawling Amish complex of furniture, bulk foods, and bakery. I've not been to Miller's as much so I thought I could bring you something different. With the clock ticking I headed for the most scenic, and quick, way there, a beautiful drive down Grace's Run Road over the history-steeped Harshaville covered bridge. But when I got to the bridge, here's what I found:
So with no clue how to circumvent the detour, I only had one real option available to me in the dwindling time:Â go to Keim Family Market....So I ended up there, but with precious little time, I took a few photos for you and grabbed a few baked goods which I'll share later...Meanwhile I took these photos:
Cherry turnovers filled with filling looked tasty....
Loaves and loaves of homemade bread, from wheat to black walnut to white beckon to be bought....
SIGH, I had 45 minutes to get to Maysville and my GPS said it would take me 52, so...yeah....I got in my car and headed south, but I was rewarded with one last glimpse of Amish ambiance:
This was a fun sight as I topped a hill.....an open buggy with a mother and two young kids....but what struck me was all the clutter in the "trunk" area...there was a cookie sheet and a bunch of papers, that would be me if I were Amish.....
And then it was onward to Maysville....part II tomorrow...
