There’s just something about pie that rounds out a Thanksgiving meal so, so nicely. Yes, cake, cookies, brownies, puddings, those are all wonderful sweets, but pie…ah, something about a few bites of something sweet in a flaky crust that makes a perfect ending to a fine feast. I will say, by the way, that Thanksgiving celebrations among the Amish vary widely. I know many Amish, especially in the most conservative communities, do not observe it at all. The more progressive an Amish community is – this is a general rule – the more they’ll observe Thanksgiving. I personally think this has a lot to do with how insular a settlement is, the more insular they are, the less exposed they are to secular and pop culture traditions.
The Amish that are celebrating Thanksgiving on Thursday will almost certainly make pie. But what kind? Certainly pumpkin will be among the favorite flavors, but there will be others. Here are 10 that you might find at an Amish Thanksgiving:
VANILLA CRUMB PIE: Anyone who comes to this site frequently knows this is one of my favorites! Click here to enjoy.
THE BISHOP’S CHOCOLATE PIE: Smooth, silky, and sweet....just a wonderful way to put an exclamation point on the end of a meal.
AMISH SUGAR CREAM PIE: What a wonderful, easy, amazing pie. Click here.
BROWN SUGAR PIE: Mmmmmm, perfect. Click here.
EASY AMISH PEACH PIE: I think I prefer the sweeter pies, like chocolate or cream pie,but nothing wrong with a good, old-fashioned fruit pie. Click here.
UNION PIE: A uniquely Amish pie. Click here.
STRAWBERRY PIE: Okay, maybe not the most seasonal, but still amazing. Click here.
AMISH PEANUT BUTTER PIE – And no list of Amish pies would be complete without peanut butter pie. So amazing. Click here.
