There's just something about pie that rounds out a Thanksgiving meal so, so nicely. Yes, cake, cookies, brownies, puddings, those are all wonderful sweets, but pie...ah, something about a few bites of something sweet in a flaky crust that makes a perfect ending to a fine feast. I will say, by the way, that Thanksgiving celebrations among the Amish vary widely. I know many Amish, especially in the most conservative communities, do not observe it at all. The more progressive an Amish community is - this is a general rule - the more they'll observe Thanksgiving. I personally think this has a lot to do with how insular a settlement is, the more insular they are, the less exposed they are to secular and pop culture traditions.
The Amish that are celebrating Thanksgiving on Thursday will almost certainly make pie. But what kind? Certainly pumpkin will be among the favorite flavors, but there will be others. Here are 10 that you might find at an Amish Thanksgiving:
Vanilla crumb pie
