Herbs are a big part of Amish cooking. These are easy to grow in windowsill gardens or to fill small spaces of an outdoor one. Amish cooking has traditionally not been spicy, but it is flavorful and some of that flavor is through herbs.

Basil, thyme, rosemary, and mint are a few favorites that are often found in Amish gardens because they are flavorful and easy to grow.

    Beating The Drumstick

Drumsticks are a “fun “piece of chicken. Kids love them. But so do adults. And they are easy to cook.  A perfect marinade that they can soak in overnight infuses them with flavor.

Barbecue and Basil Baked Drumstricks is an easy recipe that is sure to please. The basil adds some great flavor combine with the barbecue sauce and other seasonings.

Later winter and early spring is about the time of year that chickens are butchered on Amish farms. And the drumstick is always a prized piece of meat.  it’s raised on Amish farms are usually healthier, more flavorful, because of their diverse diet

I remember when I was younger, my dad coming home with a bucket of chicken from KFC. It’s some thing we might’ve done once a month, may be a little bit less often. But my brother and I would always fish around in the bucket for the prize drumstick. I think they were usually two. Man, now I’m getting nostalgic for a bucket of chicken.

So, let's get started on making these drumsticks!

Basic ingredients for the Barbecue and Basil Baked Drumsticks as you assemble the meal in your kitchen. Okay, you don't have to call them drumsticks, who does that any more anyway? Chicken legs are perfectly fine to call them. And, yes, you can use this same recipe for chicken breasts or thighs or any other bone-in piece. The drumsticks are just sometimes easier and more fun and fewer bones to deal with!

Soak in the marinade at least 30 minutes, but I highly, highly recommend a minimum of two hours, and overnight would be the best of the best. Use your favorite bbq sauce or a homemade barbecue sauce. The marinade is where you can add your own favorite touches like onion powder, black pepper, vinegar ketchup, honey, mustard, smoked paprika, or liquid smoke, whatever you want to do to doctor it up! But this recipe is also just fine the way it is. In fact, the recipe the way it is is one of my favorite baked bbq chicken drumsticks recipe.

Stick the drumsticks on the grill or in a pan or baking sheet in the oven. You can cover with foil to avoid sauce splattering.

Barbecue and Basil Baked Drumsticks is a delicious protein-packed and calorie-rich dish, designed for a hungry Amish farmer at the end of a day.
