Autumn is apple season throughout much of Amish country. This means young boys in suspenders and wearing straw hats picking apples from the orchard. Whole families work together on this, pulling an apple cart back to an outbuilding where they will peel and press them. Or make them into applesauce, or chop and dice them. Yes, the whole family pitches in during apple season on Amish farms.

There are whole Amish communities that are built around raising apples, just like there are Amish communities built around raising tobacco, or cotton, or potatoes.  The New Order Amish community near Lyndonville, New York is one that has a lot of Apple orchards.

Grace Schlabach who owns an orchard there says that apples are also used frequently to make homemade applesauce, apple pie filling, and apple dumplings. Schlabach said that many Amish cooks in the community like to halve and core apples, add some spices, put a dough around the apple, then freeze them. When they want fresh apple dumplings, all they do is thaw and bake them. The Amish of Lyndonville also freeze and can a lot of homemade cider.

Homemade apple bread is a favorite dish of Amish makers. Crisp apple salads in the autumn are popular, I could go on and on extolling the virtues of apples

And, of course, just eating them sliced a great or if your teeth can handle it just eating them whole.

Oh, this recipe...man, does it live up to its name: Apple Goody. Gloria included it in her column years ago. Put a dollop of whipped cream or ice cream on it and its even better!

apples for the apple goody recipe

Apple goody is a delicious recipe, easy and flavorful. You can use gala apples, that is a favorite among the Amish to use. But try good, old-fashioned Granny Smith for a more tart dessert. Drive through Amish country this time of year and you'll find a lot of produce stands selling freshly-grown apples.

    Amish Apple Goody

Make sure to cut the apples into uniformly diced squares.

    Apple Goodie

The crumb topping encases the apples in this super amazing flavor. Oh, and if you are thinking of growing your own apples, pick a sunny spot. Apples produce best when grown in full sun, which means six or more hours of direct summer Sun daily.

I like my crumb topping nice and golden.

not about the recipe even though it sounds quite delicious.
no problem with political mentions IF it is just presented as an event etc and is a journalistic article and not the authors opinion. thank you. yes you are entitled to all of your opinions but that is for with your friends and family not as a reporter. Sorry to go on a rant. I am just really up to my eyeballs in officious tv personalities assuming we are all so stupid they have to tell us how to think, vote, etc.
