Not sure if anyone has any strong thoughts on this or not, so just thought I'd throw it out there.
I was in line at the post office this morning and saw this woman with blue hair.  Not the kind that old ladies used to get out of a bottle but actual sky blue hair.  The woman seemed very kind and bubbly  and, well, she had bright blue hair.  Never got a great look at her face, but I'd put her at being in her 30s or 40s, so it's not like she's a teenager.
When I was a kid, colored hair was the domain of the punk rockers and trouble-makers (I'm generalizing) Â but now it has gone mainstream. Little girls wear streak of color in their hair as do 50-something women.
When someone we knew got their hair colored last year my parents about freaked out. Â For me, well, I guess I just shrug. Â There's a young barista at the local coffeehouse that has green hair. Â Tattoos, hair colors, piercings, they have all gone much more mainstream than when I was a young lad. Â I guess I'm kind of blah because I have none of the above. Â I guess I could get my ear pierced but, sheesh, that would just seem "not me." Â Although that may well be enough reason to do it: totally get out of the comfort zone. Â I don't know, I guess I prefer blah, but I'm not really bothered tremendously by others who choose to decorate their bodies whatever form makes them comfortable. Â Or if I am a twinge bothered by something, I remind myself and try to suppress it (okay, I'll admit I'm not a fan of the earringsthat expan the earlobe, there's a name for them but I can't remember what it is, but they expand out the earlobe where you could practically throw a marble through the hole...I don't care for those)
So, does anyone else have any thoughts on this stuff?

The earlobe-stretchers are called gauges. I, too, see no point in doing that to your ears. Tattoos and body piercings are okay if they're tasteful and can be covered up most of the way or removed while at work. I think a lot of "young" people get them in the spur of the moment and don't think about the implications of those decisions when it comes time to look for a real world job. That said, my husband has had his ear pierced since college, and no one in his previous job at a large law firm or in his current position at a children's hospital has said anything about it. The law firm had a strict policy on tattoos - they had to be covered up / not showing or you would be sent home to put on a different outfit.

Always good to hear from you, Mavis...thank you for clearing up the name, I just couldn't think of what they were called!

Well, about the colored hair thing... I'm a 57 year young woman and I have short purple hair, have had for a few years.. I tried blue, pink, red and turquoise. Purple is my color. I get comments all the time, good ones.. I just say thank you and go on.I love it when small children say something and their moms try to either try and rush off or try to get them to be quite. . I think now I have more white that brown. . haha.. I love life and mainly I love GOD...

LOL, thanks for the comment Debbie, yes, I am always worried my 2-year-old will say something if she sees some brightly colored hair, but so far she hasn't...
