Gloria has been writing The Amish Cook column for six years this month. Crazy how fast time has flown.
Trying to choose 5 of my favorite columns over the years is an exercise in futility, because she's had so many good ones. Her husband Danied and her mother, Dorcas, have also chipped in some great ones through the years. And recipes are amazing. I'd describe Gloria's cooking style has steeped in traditional Amish culture, but with some more progressive twists...smootheies and gluten-free and sugar-free options are things you'll find in Gloria's kitchen, but you might not necessarily see them in some other more conservative Amish settlements that hew to a very narrow cooking style.
So, here are five favorite columns and recipes of Gloria's through the years:
GLORIA AND DANIEL LOVE STORY: I love this early column of Glora's that focuses on how she met her husband and what their wedding was like, plus an amazing recipe for Amish Wedding Steak, check it all out here!
The Amish school in Flat Rock
Amish marinated carrots
FLAT ROCK AMISH SCHOOL AND MARINATED CARROTS: I always enjoy when Gloria talks about their little Amish school, so you have her talking about that, plus sharing a recipe for these amazing carrots and, yeah, this is a favorite column of mine!
GLORIA'S GRANDMOTHER'S STUFFING: Gloria's Amish church has a bit more of a missionary zeal than you find in other Amish ones, so I love hearing about the different mission activities they have, like an annual "widow's Thanksgiving." Click here to read more and get the recipe.
GRILLING WITH GLORIA: The outdoor grill is a big part of Daniel and Gloria's cooking repertoire and I love hearing about it. Steaks have been a rarity in the column over the years, but check out this bacon-wrapped grilled steaks that appeared in a column back in April 2016.
READER QUESTIONS: One of the endearing aspects of the column is Gloria's special relationship with readers...she shares an amazingly open rapport with readers who are always invited to ask her questions about Amish life...check out this reader question column, plus a recipe for Amish date pudding and caramel sauce, this is an amazing summer recipe!
