There are no rhinestone-covered balls on New Year's Eve for the Amish to watch. But the occasion is often observed and celebrated. You'll find many Amish families huddled around kerosene lamps on New Year's Eve night watching the clock, enjoying some snacks and dips, like this Amish BLT Dip. And when the appointed hour hits, the Amish will celebrate like most everyone else (no champagne, however, although maybe beer) with a raise of a glass and celebratory shouts. Some Amish will set off firecrackers outside or otherwise.

So, what might you find on an Amish table on New Year's Eve? Homemade cheese balls, plates of crackers, dips (like this Amish BLT Dip!), cookies, and snacks, just an amazing assortment of goodies will grace the average Amish table as the New Year ticks closer.

I've written before about an elderly Amish man that I knew in the Berne, Indiana community who would stand on his porch at midnight and blow on a big conch shell that made a bugling sound that echoed across the countryside. Then the kerosene lanterns are quickly extinguished and everyone hustles off to bed. After all, the cows will still need milking in the morning!

So, lets get to one of the more popular recipes....who doesn't like a good BLT? Well, you can get all the flavor of a BLT in a dip, spread it on some crackers and you have a deconstructed BLT of sorts.

This dip only requires six ingredients

Most Amish dips like this are very simple, yet very flavorful.

Adding Sour Cream to the Tomatoes for BLT Dip
    adding mayo to the tomatoes

Most Amish making this dip would be using home-cured bacon, sometimes their own homemade mayo, and on and on...so think freshness when you make this!

    stirring the BLT dip
    Mix it well

A dip like this pairs well with crackers or even little slices of bread. Those little baguette type slices would be perfect for this.

    Delicious dip!

The dip can be put into a bowl and surrounded with crackers for easy serving. I know there aren't many large NYE gatherings this year, so you can always just file this recipe away for another time!
