Sometimes when it comes to stuffing recipes, less is more. This Indiana Amish Farmhouse Dressing is an example of this credo at work.

I mean, this is basically just bread and broth and minimal seasoning but, to me, that is what makes this such a great and authentic Amish recipe. Dressing and stuffing are both popular in Amish kitchens, but they tend towards the minimalist versions, like this one.
Indiana Amish Farmhouse Dressing
This Indiana Amish Farmhouse Dressing is an authentic recipe that comes from the Amish Cook archives circ. 1992. This is a very bare bones recipe and that is fine, it works. Now, I always botch up the terms dressing and stuffing, I just kind of use them interchangeably, but there is a difference. If you need clarity on the difference, here is an article. Gosh I just always called it stuffing...I guess I'll need to watch it from here on out. What about you, is it dressing or stuffing?
Amish Thanksgiving meals are usually pretty low-key affairs. Turkey is a tradition, but large, large family gatherings are not all that common among the Amish on Thanksgiving. So Amish don't observe it at all, other Amish, influenced by the larger non-Amish society, do celebrate the day. But it's not something that has traditionally been a "big deal" among the Amish. Here are more Amish Thanksgiving recipes.
Anyway. I digress. This is a simple, authentic recipe from the Berne, Indiana Amish community. Notice there are not 30 ingredients and that is a good thing, it lets the bread and simple seasonings do the heavy lifting and you get to enjoy a great stu..er, dressing.
Gather all your ingredients before and you'll see how easy this is! Many Amish cook in kerosene stoves, some use gas and the most conservative still do most of their cooking on woodstoves. The "New Order" or "electric Amish" will use electric stoves.
Your house will fill with the smell of this simple dressing. And there are some variations that can make differences in taste and texture. For instance, most Amish cooks would probably use a loaf of homemade white bread in this, but there's no reason you can't use wheat or multigrain. And while this recipe is very basic, you could dice up some carrots to put in here. Some people like apples in their stuffing (not me), or raisins in their stuffing (not me).
This is a moist, delicious stuffing. Makes a great side or a meal in itself. With Thanksgiving coming up, this is one you'll want to consider for an easy, delicious dressing!

Hello Kevin. It says add eggs toward end of the directions. I did not see any eggs mentioned in the recipe. If there are supposed to be eggs, are they boiled, raw,etc ? Thank you.
