Meatloaf is as common an item in Amish kitchens as meatballs are in an Italian kitchen. A busy Amish mom who has canning, mending, helping with schoolwork, cleaning, laundry, gardening, and on and on is always on the lookout for quick delicious dinners. And there’s not much easier than mixing up a meatloaf and popping it in the oven.
They are so many variations on meatloaf. Each family has its own special recipe steeped in tradition and flavor. At least, hopefully, flavor. Some meatloaves are as crumbly and dry as sand in the desert. Other meatloaf recipes are juicy and flavorful.
I bet one Amish man who used to make fun of his wife’s meatloaf, you could tell it was all in good humor. And she accepted that. But it was kind of a running family joke about her dry meatloaf that you would need to wear steel-toed boots if you dropped a slice on your foot.
Anyway, there’s not much better after a long day than slicing off a juicy hunk of a meatloaf packed with flavor. This particular recipe comes to us from Pennsylvania.
Start by mixing the meat up. Most Amish will have access to home-sourced lean beef and home-grown onions.
You can use your own homemade bread crumbs, you can buy Italian seasoned bread crumbs, or just use plain regular store-bought bread crumbs. That's up to you, but the crumbs add some needed texture to this Delicious Dutch Meatloaf!
Really soak it with the sauce. The brown sugar adds a nice touch of sweet. That seems to be a hallmark of Amish cooking, add a bit of sweetness to everything, including meatloaf!
Add some parsley flakes for flavor and color and serve with warm buttered bread. Many Amish serve this on a bed of noodles and that would be a really nice touch, so absolutely consider doing that!
