Time to buckle up and take our weekly whirl through the blogosphere to look at anything and everything Amish or Plain over the past week. Have some interesting reading and recipes this week, so grab a cup of coffee and enjoy!
SMALL-BATCH AMISH SUGAR COOKIES: The One Perfect Bite blog features a recipe this week for a classic "Amish" sugar cookie that can be made in small batches. The author questions how "Amish" the recipe is and I'm on the fence. The reality is that there are only so many ways you can make a sugar cookie and this recipe is pretty standard. Who knows whether its origins are Amish? (And, in a larger sense, who cares?) I think the Amish angle of this recipe would come down to the basics: a sugar cookie made with homemade butter,a free-range egg, fresh flour and baked in a wood oven going to add to the flavor. Anyway, click here for a great recipe!
An Amish discount grocery outside of Muncie, Indiana
AMISH DISCOUNT GROCERIES: I posted a couple of weeks ago about Amish discount groceries, sometimes known as "bent and dents." A blogger visited a couple in Michigan and northern Indiana and wrote about her experiences. She went to E&S in Shipeshewana, which is the granddaddy of Bent and Dents, just an amazing shopping experience. I've heard of Whispering Pines in Fremont, Michigan but have not been there. AMISH AND THE ARK: Amish carpenters are nearing completion of a giant Noah's Ark at the Creation Museum in Williamstown, Kentucky I'm not surprised that some Amish carpenters are working on the project, the Creation Museum has become a "must stop at" destination for many Amish families on their travel itineraries. Click here to read about the Ark.
PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH POT PIE: This is an amazing-sounding recipe steeped in Pennsylvania Dutch culture and traditions. Pot pie soup is a favorite in many Amish kitchens, but the farther west you get from Pennsylvania the plainer the soup tends to become. This recipe is a classic, traditional Pennsylvania Pennsylvania Dutch pot pie soup. Click here for the recipe.
FOREIGN PERSPECTIVE: This is a blog post from, I presume, a 40-year-old Italian woman who visited Amish country in Pennsylvania and shared her experiences. My Mom's side of the family is mostly Italian that's a culture I adore. SIGH, since when are 40-year-old Italians younger than me? When did that happen? Her blog post is worth checking out for the beautiful photography of Lancaster County's Amish settlements. I am linking to a Google translated version of her post. The only thing that leaves me scratching my head are a couple of photos that seem to purport to show Amish homes (but they look so suburban), maybe some Amish are moving into homes like that....but I doubt it....anyone know? I'm thinking something was lost in the translation. Click here to read her post.
