Simplicity is the hallmark of Amish menus. And while there is nothing old-fashioned about ingredients like packaged cream cheese, chocolate chips, and powdered sugar, these are readily available at Amish country stores and bulk food stores. So whipped up something like this chocolate chip cheese ball is a piece of cake!
My ball was more of a dip, but that's okay.
🥣 The Amish and Dip Desserts
Just don't double dip. But if you get past that social faux pas, dessert dips are super popular among the Amish. Why? Well, if you think about all the large gatherings that the Amish attend and have to fix food for, that explains it. It's difficult to make cake for 200 people, you'd have to make several cakes, transport them by buggy, hope they don't get destroyed by the bumpy ride, and hope you have enough cake slices for everyone.
With a dip, you get the same super taste that you'd get with a cake or a cookie or an eclair, but you can make a huge portion, transport it in a bowl, set out a spoon and some crackers and let people help themselves. It's much more difficult to run out of dip than it is cake and easier to make plenty.
📋 Step-by-Step Amish Chocolate Chip Cheeseball
This recipe is about as easy as it gets. The only thing you have to decide is whether you want a "ball" or a dip. I wanted a ball, but I don't think I added enough powdered sugar. So if the consistency of your ball is more "dippy" then add more powdered sugar. I think I started out OK.
Or maybe what you need to do is keep an extra block of cream cheese on hand and adjust amounts of both cream cheese and powdered sugar, if it is not thick enough for you.
But here was my "mistake" is I made this for a gathering and I didn't leave enough time for it to chill in the fridge for a couple of hours, then it'll shape easily into a ball. But if you don't have time to do that, just make it like I did, skip the chilling part and eat and enjoy as a dip!
And keep some animal crackers, graham crackers, or vanilla wafers handy for enjoying this!
